Brewing beer in Thailand began in 1934. (although the Singha label says “SINCE 1933″) Locally produced Thai beers face competition from major international brands, but have successfully found their own niche in the Thai market and abroad.

Thai beer is typically lager. The oldest and most popular Thai beer in Thailand and abroad is Singha,

brewed by Boon Rawd Brewery. Singha also appears in Thailand in Light (3.5% ABV) and Draught versions.

Recently, Singha has been challenged by Chang beer, Chang Beermade by Thai

BeveragesChang is noted globally for its sponsorship of Liverpool‘sEverton football club, as its name and logo have appeared on the team uniform since 2004.

Boon Rawd Brewery also makes Leo, a non-premium beer, and Leo Super, a 6.5% alcohol beer. In addition, Thai Beverages sells Archa, a mass-market, non-premium lager. Boon Rawd Brewery also sold a global brand Mittweida, but this was replaced by a beer brewed in partnership with InBev, Kloster. It also sells a 6.5% lager called Thai Beer.

Other locally brewed Thai beers are Phuket Beer and Siam, in Pathum Thani province; the latter brewery exports Bangkok Beer abroad, but does not sell it in Thailand. Phuket Beer and Federbrau are the only Thai beers brewed according to the German purification laws or Reinheitsgebot; Phuket Beer has recently won a Gold Medal

Award in the Category of Best Lager under the selection process of the Monde Selection organisation based in Brussels, Belgium. Klassik beer is another local beer brewed in Pathum Thani province. See Beer and breweries in Thailand for a more complete alphabetical listing.

Although foreign beers are popular within the country, the Thai government seeks to shelter its domestic breweries through the imposition of import duties; in addition, all imported beers must bear an import sticker on their bottle caps. As a result, Thai brewers have struck partnership deals with western brewers, such as Carlsberg‘s partnership with Thai Beverages.

ThaiBev brews Chang Beer, (Thai: เบียร์ช้าง) a pale lager. Chang (Thai: ช้าง) is the Thai word for elephant, an animal that has cultural and historical significance to Thailand. The logo for Chang Beer features two elephants facing one other. Chang is brewed for the domestic market at 6.4% abv; and for the export market at 5% abv. However, the two “versions” are in fact different beers, the export beer being a 100% malt beer like its domestic draught product, while the Beer Chang sold in-country in Thailand contains some rice.   Chang Beer, which first started production in March 1995 at the brewery in the district of Bang Ban, Ayutthaya Province, is the top-selling brand in Thailand.  In December 2000 Carlsberg and Chang established a 50/50 joint venture, Carlsberg Asia, with the vision to create a significant brewing company in Asia. The Carlsberg influence can be seen in the typography of the ‘Beer Chang’ logo, which resembles the classic ‘Carlsberg Beer’. In 2005 Carlsberg pulled out from the venture, resulting in Chang claiming US$ 2.5 bn in damages. A final settlement of US$ 120m was subsequently paid by Carlsberg.   The beer won a gold medal at the 2007 Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA). In 2006, the company launched Chang Light, 4.2% abv, and Chang Draught in bottles, at 5% abv.

quiddity9 : ”I found Chang to have a very odd underlying taste (metallic / chemical???) and a nasty headache to boot.”

After Leo, this is a good number two in the authors Thai beer rank. The beer is really good, but can give you quite a surprise if you are new to Thailand, the sun + chang beer…   be careful…  :-)

Lager 5%. Besides Singha, Boon Rawd Brewery makes Leo, a non-premium beer. For the price that it offers, its not a bad beer. The Thai tourists and travelers generally drink Chang, Singha or imported beer. Thai people prefer Leo, Its now the top selling beer brand in Thailand.  Its simple and a great drinker when it’s cold.  Leo, which is made by the same brewery as Singha, is a very light but refreshing beer.  Its very similar to  American light beers but with a little more flavor.

blurredphoto: “Beer Leo is one of the most, if not the most, popular beer in Thailand. It is a direct competitor to Beer Chang, and from what I can tell has won the competition.
Why? 7-11 sells single bottles for 50 cents and big 630ml bottles for about a buck- very cheap in a ocuntry with high vice taxes. It is popular because it is such a good value- it tastes ok, and does not leave one with a nasty hangover.
I should mention that I have never seen a Thai person drinking it straight- it is always drunk with plenty of ice.”

This is the authors favourite thai beer, its just great..

Singha, (Thai: สิงห์, correctly pronounced sing or singh, (lion) , but typically pronounced by foreigners to Thailand as singha , is a 5% alcohol-by-volume pale lager. It is also available in 5% abv draught version as Singha Lager Draft, and the new 3.5% abv Singha Light introduced in 2006. Beginning in September 2007, a 5.0%  version of Singha Lager has replaced the 6.0%  original version that has earned the Singha name its reputation. This new version, while still brewed in Thailand by Pathmthani Brewery Co., Ltd., proclaims on its labelling to have been brewed under the supervision of Singha Corporation Co., Ltd. instead of Boon Rawd Brewery Co. Ltd. The last known fill date for Singha Lager 6.0% bottles sold in the United States is October 18, 2007.Beer production capacity is 1 billion liters per year. Until recently Singha was the best selling beer in Thailand, but is now challenged by the cheap and more potent (6.4% abv) Beer Chang, brewed by ThaiBev . Singha has been available in the UK since August 2009 in supermarkets like Tesco,  as well as in Thai Restaurants across the country. In 2007, Boon Rawd regained its throne of beer market leadership in Thailand after it started making Leo beer, the now top selling beer in Thailand. In August 2010, Singha formed a 4-year partnership with Premier League football club, Chelsea. In the 2010 Formula One season, Singha’s logo is seen on the Red Bull Racing team’s livery.  It already had a similar partnership with Manchester United.

The auhor have tasted this beer, and liked it. But its not the favorite thai beer.  In the Thai countryside you rarely find Singha for some reason,  both Chang, leo and archa (even heineken) are more popular then singha outside of tourist areas and bangkok.

In 2004, the company introduced Archa beer, at 5.4% alcohol by volume. The beer won a gold medal at the 2007 Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA). Beer Archa was launched  to expand the market share, particularly in the standard and premium product groups, and to respond to increasing demands from a new generation of beer drinkers who prefer smooth beer with lower alcohol content. Beer Archa thus serves as another alternative for beer drinkers.

The author have tasted this beer, but did not like it very much, and it seems most Thai people on the countryside feel the same

Here is my report about the beers after living in Thailand for half a year.

After some time I have come to decide that Singha is the best Thai beer. At first it was Chang.

I have found Leo to be inconsistent in the taste, a few times it tasted like there was a soap residue inside. I wanted to give Leo a chance because that is what i mostly see people in my neighborhood drinking. I have found Leo to give medium hangovers.

Archa taste is inconsistent and leaves the most wicked hangover. Consistently an absolutely terrible hangover there has to be some bad ingredient in this beer. If they would remove that ingredient it wouldn’t be so bad for the price. I’ll never drink this again under any circumstances. I bought Cheers once, and I thought it tasted gross, so I never got it again.

As I’ve said, Chang what my first choice, for quite awhile. Mostly is because it was stong and cheap, plus really like the taste. I would find that when I would drink other types of beer, I would be unsatisfied and just think to myself, “I shoulda bought Chang” But then after some time, I realized I became addicted to Chang, and it also has undesirable hangover which stated to be my norm for a few mornings straight and would last throughout the day and I was having a hard time concentrating on things. I’m a programmer and I found my thinking skills were jumbled. I also found that I’m not able to function very well on Chang. After I finish two large bottles, I become totally sleepy and have no motivation. So its a good way to waste what could have been a cool evening.

But now, when I open a Singha, its so refreshing and smooth and clean tasting. Has a nice color when you pour it and gives a mild buzz, even after 2 large bottles, I can function. I can wake up the next day feeling decent. It’s more expensive, but worth it and I have a new favorite Thai beer. Singha
